Imperial Porter (Mikes Organic Brewery)

Style: Imperial/Strong Porter, aromas of chocolate, caramel, and vanilla. Taste is sweet, with bitter notes, and very long length. Palate is syrupy, and full bodied. Black, with an off-white head. The origins of this beer style are shrouded in mystery, with legends of the London street porters and regal decrees, all a bit unclear really...

Cassels & Sons Red Rudi

A brief history of flip-top bottles

Cassels & Sons use “flip-top” bottles; the classic flip-top was invented in 1875 by Nicolai Fritzner in Germany, who solved the existing problem of making beer bottles with their high interior pressure ready to transport. It quickly became the main bottle-top for beer bottles worldwide. After only 30 years, the flip-top started to be replaced by the "Crown Cap", which was invented by the American William Painter in 1892.

Hereafter; a play by Germany’s boldest poet, Werner Fritsch

Cassels and Sons is delighted to be hosting this gritty contemporary German theatre produced by the Free Theatre Christchurch -  right here at the Tannery in Woolston.

In Hereafter, author and filmmaker Werner Fritsch, described by Der Spiegel as "Germany’s boldest poet", dares to go deep down into the soulscape of a man who all his life was under the spell of the underworld.

Pineapple Lump Porter (Three Boys)

three boysThis beer contains the consummate kiwi lolly (or sweet) in the form of Pineapple Lumps - a chewy chocolate-covered pineapple flavoured treat that has been manufactured and sold in NZ since 1935. It is considered unique to NZ and is a favourite treat posted to many a homesick kiwi abroad. The brewer tried several ways to impart the unique chocolate/pineapple flavour from the "lumps" into this beer based on a Robust Porter.

Neudorf Ale (Moutere Brewing)

German settlers arrived in Upper Moutere in 1843 and after a rough start, settled Upper Moutere, then called Sarau, in 1850. Cordt Bennseman started building the Moutere Inn in 1850 as a resting place between Richmond and Motueka - in the heart of the new hop growing area.

Neudorf Ale is an Altbier and is similar in style to an NZ draft or ale. It's malt driven, copper brown and has a low hop profile.
