Coconut Milk Stout (Three Boys)

three boysLast night I had a big black pint placed in front of me. It had notes of tawny port if you held it up to the light and a covering of latte coloured head. The smell off the top of the beer was that of coconut rough, tropical flowers, subtle char and cocoa. Hello, thinks I, I rather like this. And so I drank and those flavours, so evocative, came flooding through.

renaissance voyagerOriginally brewed as a one off beer for use through a beer engine, Voyager is now being relaunched as a carbonated IPA on tap and in 500ml bottles.

Inspired by the boldly hoppy Ales of old that were exported from Britain to the furthest corners of her vast and glorious empire, Voyager I.P.A. is a rich satisfying Ale with an emphatic hop bite.

Pilsner (Emersons)

emersons pilsnerA ‘Kiwi Classic’, Pilsner is a showcase for Nelson grown Riwaka hops.

Its overt fruitiness begs comparison with Marlborough’s world-beating Sauvignon Blancs.

Emerson’s Pilsner oozes citrus and passionfruit aromas and flavours. The beer’s palate shows a hint of early malt sweetness but develops a lengthy dry finish.

Sarau Lager (Moutere Brewing)

sarau lagerGerman settlers arrived in Upper Moutere in 1843 and after a rough start, settled Upper Moutere, then called Sarau, in 1850. Cordt Bennseman started building the Moutere Inn in 1850 as a resting place between Richmond and Motueka - in the heart of the new hop growing area.

Brewed in the Munich Helles style, Sarau Lager offers malty flavours with a refreshing and gentle hop finish.

Golden Ale (Three Boys)

three boysPours clear and golden (tick in the box, it does what it says on the label) with a good enduring head with biggish bubbles in it. The bouquet is fresh and fragrant. Among the grapiness and lemon grass was a toffeish note that intrigues. Also there’s banana passionfruit scents that reminds me of long summers in Nelson as well as hot buttered toast. I’d be quite happy if this is the last thing I ever smell.

Pig & Whistle (Harringtons)

Pilsner (Tuatara)

tuatara pilsnerThe pilsner is brewed to a classic European recipe using 100% New Zealand malt and Saaz hops. This gives it a traditional hop bitterness, flavour and aroma of a true pilsner. An authentic Czech pilsner yeast was selected for its ability to ferment at very low temperatures to produce low levels of esters and other by-products while enhancing the malt perception and allowing the clean crisp bitterness to show in the foreground.
