Shitwhistle have been brewing beer in North Canterbury for nearly one hundred and twenty years and for six generations.
It all started in 1895 when Otto Pschitvisl left his home in Rosenheim in Upper Bavaria to come to Ethelton to make his fortune brewing the beer he loved. Otto loved the place so much he married a local girl and created a clan of 14 children. When his son Karl took over the business in 1914, things were a bit difficult for Germans in New Zealand and so the family name was anglicised to Shitwhistle. The locals seemed not to be bothered by the family though as the clan embraced community life providing members of the council, a mayor, a cable laying business and a good proportion of the Ethelton rugby team. In fact, many began to call Ethelton ‘the Shitwistle town’.
Today Dave Shitwhistle is proud to run the still family-owned brewery, creating earthy, charcterful beers for all to enjoy.
Enjoy a shitwhistle!
