This beer contains the consummate kiwi lolly (or sweet) in the form of Pineapple Lumps – a chewy chocolate-covered pineapple flavoured treat that has been manufactured and sold in NZ since 1935. It is considered unique to NZ and is a favourite treat posted to many a homesick kiwi abroad. The brewer tried several ways to impart the unique chocolate/pineapple flavour from the “lumps” into this beer based on a Robust Porter. Fermentation with the “lumps” and other techniques did not come close to “dry lumping”. We “dry-lumped” the beer first subtlety then, later, with a more vigorous “dry-lumping” to impart a delicate balance of chocolate malts from the beer with chocolate and pineapple ester from the “lumps”. We aimed for “classic kiwi flavours in a classic kiwi brew” and at the same time a bit of fun. As we say in the brewery – “dry-lumped for your pleasure”.
